Why Millennium?
By David J. Saxton, President, The Computer Manager
Honestly? I don't know. It just came to me.
Seriously. About a month after I took over the reins at The Computer Manager, there were five of us in a development meeting discussing the finer details of the "New" Debt$Net we were going to be developing. This wasn't the first meeting like this; we'd met dozens of times; but never landed on a name. During this meeting— and to my chagrin—one of our programmers started referring to the new solution as “The Debt$Net Helper”. "The Debt$Net Helper?" Seriously??? Yeah, I don't think so. The new Debt$Net wasn't going to be a "helper." Debt$Net doesn't need a helper; it's a fantastic program. It has been one for nearly 40 years. It’s stable, computationally accurate, responsive, reliable, and intuitive. No help needed for Debt$Net! However, as we
all know, most legacy collection software programs haven't been robustly developed. These programs, Debt$Net included, are mostly stuck where they have been for several years. So, while Debt$Net does not need “help” in the traditional sense, it does need innovation, new solutions, and cutting-edge technology—all developed at lightning speed. That's what Debt$Net needs.
As I thought about this, the word millennium popped into my head. I immediately said, "Millennium. That's the new name, but not just Millennium, DebtNet$Millennium." It felt right. It sounded right. It was right. So that's what we went with. This happened back in September of 2025. And since choosing Millennium as the name of our new platform, it's felt right every time I say it. So, Millennium it is—er, DebtNet$Millennium.
Okay, we have a name. And while I went with my gut in the moment, research afterward confirmed my instinct. The strict definition of the word millennium is 1000 years. If, however, we look at synonyms (both from Microsoft Word and Thesaurus.com), we find words like epoch, happiness, paradise, prosperity, serenity, and utopia. Realistically speaking, a software program isn't going to instill happiness or serenity or provide a paradise or utopia. However, from a big-picture perspective, that's what we are writing it to do.
The plan is that the new solutions in DebtNet$Millennium will be so comprehensive and leading-edge that an agency owner will have access to everything they and their team have ever wanted from their software. From application programming interfaces (APIs) to process automation to intelligent integration with artificial intelligence, it is going to do it all. I realize that's a bold statement, but I've already seen it happen. And it is very impressive.
We are doing some amazing things with DebtNet$Millennium. I'm as excited for the future as I was 32 years ago when I started my own agency. I'm also humbled and honored to be part of the "rising of the phoenix," and to participate in the next chapter for one of the most respected software solutions in the Accounts Receivable Management industry. I hope you're also excited to be part of the journey. So, hang on, things are just getting started. Thanks for reading. Have a great month.
